Pronouncing The Word Chakra With Respect

I’d like to make a comment about the word chakras, which represents the energy gathering and transmitting centers throughout out body.

I truly mean no disrespect, and not standing on my soapbox about this issue. Yet I feel compelled to share what a seeker of truth and higher energy may want to know.

Having heard it spoken multiple ways over the years, I was fortunate enough while getting my first Religious Studies degree to speak two highly respected Sanskrit scholars to figure out the correct pronunciation. I wanted clarification so I could be respectful of the original language. Both were very pleased to have me ask, as few bother to ask them. According to both of these very credible and renowned experts, using the current pronunciation, that sounds like “sshhhak-ra” it actually is an ancient term for human defecation. (ick!) To the experts, it is offensive to hear it pronounced that way. They both told me at different times that the correct pronunciation for the centers starts with the sound of “chalk” or “chalk-ra.”

According to the Sanskrit experts, the “shhh” is impolite. I have learned to translate the mispronunciation in my head and overlook it. Yet, I can still hear each of their voices and see each of their faces as they explained the difference to me with gratitude for an opportunity to define the difference.

Yes, intention for being respectful and correct, even through mispronunciation, does help alter the negative effect, yet is still inconsistent with the original language tones.

Sounds are sacred, and set up important vibrational (energy) tones.

So consider this more respectful and productive way of referring to our sacred energy centers.
